Women's Tennis falls to Bowling Green State and University of Chicago

Bowling Green State Match Recap

In the first tennis matchup of the Holy Cross College Women's Tennis of the season on Friday January 31st against NCAA Division I Bowling Green State University ,the Saints faced a tough challenge but showed resilience throughout the event. The competition started with doubles play, where Holy Cross' Leah Gonzales-Edwards (London, England) and Victoria Savvides (Limassol, Cyprus) made a strong statement by defeating Qianyu Liu and Konstantina Adamopoulou of Bowling Green State 6-2 in the #1 doubles match. However, the Saints struggled in the lower doubles positions. Sofia Rocha (Rio de Janerio, Brazil) and Nicole Martinez (Villavicencio, Colombia) fell 6-1 to Tia Clemens and Isabella Baker in the #2 doubles, while Jamison Geofferys (HS Anderson, Indiana) and Anna Vanderhyde (HS Grand Rapids, Michigan) were narrowly defeated 6-4 by Leticia Fonseca and Lucia Gaio in the #3 doubles.

As the singles matches unfolded, Holy Cross continued to battle hard. In the #1 singles, Victoria Savvides faced a tough opponent in Tia Clemens, eventually losing in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. On a positive note, Jamison Geofferys delivered an impressive performance in the #2 singles, dominating Qianyu Liu 6-2, 6-3 to secure a point for Holy Cross. However, Sofia Rocha couldn't overcome Isabella Baker in the #3 singles, suffering a 6-4, 6-1 defeat.

In the #4 singles, Leah Gonzales-Edwards showed tremendous fight, taking the first set 6-3, but her opponent, Konstantina Adamopoulou, came back strong to win the next two sets 6-0, 6-3, claiming the match. Nicole Martinez, however, had a dominant outing in the #5 singles, sweeping Lucia Gaio 6-0, 6-3, showing her confidence on the court. Finally, Anna Vanderhyde faced a challenging match against Leticia Fonseca in the #6 singles, where she was outplayed 6-1, 6-0.

Despite the tough loss overall, Holy Cross demonstrated a lot of heart, with strong performances from individuals like Gonzales-Edwards, Savvides, Geofferys, and Martinez. The team will undoubtedly take this experience into their future matches, with hope for more victories ahead.

University of Chicago Match Recap 

In what turned out to be a tough day for Holy Cross College's Women's Tennis team on Saturday February 1st , the Saints were overpowered by the NCC Division I University of Chicago in a 7-0 defeat. The match opened with doubles play, where the University of Chicago quickly established their dominance. In the #1 doubles, Oliwia and Sylwia Mikos of Chicago handed Leah Gonzales-Edwards (London, England) and Victoria Savvides (Limassol, Cyprus) a tough 6-0 loss. In the #2 doubles, Shianna Guo and Issabelle Chong defeated Sofia Rocha (Rio de Janerio, Brazil) and Nicole Martinez (Villavicencio, Colombia) 6-4, while Charlotte Klein and Sarena Biria of Chicago also emerged victorious in the #3 doubles, overpowering Jamison Geofferys (Anderson, Indiana) and Anna Vanderhyde (Grand Rapids, Michigan) 6-2.
