Saints Make History with Upset Over No. 1 University of Chicago
Chicago, Ill. – The Holy Cross College men's tennis team made program history on Saturday, February 15, with a thrilling 4-3 victory over the University of Chicago, the No. 1 team in the country and defending NCAA Division III National Champions (2022 and 2024). This monumental win marks the first time the Saints have ever defeated the Maroons, having entered the matchup with an 0-7 record in the all-time series.
Facing a University of Chicago team that has established itself as the best in the nation, the Saints knew they had a challenge ahead. The Maroons, a powerhouse program with a national championship title, have consistently dominated at the national level with their depth, skill, and experience. However, Holy Cross stepped onto the court determined to make a statement, and they did just that.
The match began with doubles play, where Chicago overpowered Holy Cross with its strength and claimed the opening point against the Saints. Falling behind early, the Saints regrouped and turned their attention to singles matches, where they mounted an impressive comeback. Perry Gregg (Chicago, IL) , Luca McManus (Delray Beach, Florida), Oscar Wai (Hong Kong, China), and Calvin Golmei (Tyler, Texas) all delivered under pressure, picking up crucial victories in their respective singles matches. With the overall score knotted at 3-3, the final match rested on Calvin Golmei's shoulders. Rising to the occasion, Golmei delivered an impressive performance to clinch the decisive point, securing the historic upset for the Saints.
The win over Chicago capped off an already impressive weekend for Holy Cross, who also swept Bethel University 4-0 on Friday, February 14. Against the Pilots, the Saints dominated from start to finish, setting the tone with strong doubles play and maintaining control in singles competition. The back-to-back victories highlight the team's dedication and continued growth as they push forward in the season.
With history made and confidence growing, the Saints now set their sights on their next challenge as they prepare to face Huntington on February 22nd at home.
